Year 7 Tests: NGRT & CATS 2025

I hope that your child has settled in well so far during their transition to Westbourne. I must admit, I am really impressed by the efforts of the new Year 7 so far.

Next week, all of our Year 7 students will be taking part in two short assessments: the New Group Reading Test (NGRT) and the Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4). These are nothing for the children to worry about – they are simply tools that help us get to know their learning needs better as they settle into secondary school.

What is the NGRT?

The NGRT is a reading test that looks at how well students can understand and make sense of different types of text. The questions change depending on how the student is getting on, so it gives us a really accurate picture of their reading skills.

What is the CAT4?

The CAT4 is not about what students already know, but about how they think and solve problems. It looks at four areas:

  • Words (verbal reasoning)
  • Numbers (quantitative reasoning)
  • Shapes and patterns (non-verbal reasoning)
  • Visualising and imagining (spatial reasoning)

Why do we do these tests?

The results give us a clear idea of each child’s strengths and where they may need a little extra support. They also help teachers plan lessons that stretch and challenge all students, so that everyone has the best chance to succeed.

There is no need for students to prepare in advance – just encourage them to come in with their usual equipment, a good night’s sleep and a positive attitude. We will share key information with you once the assessments are complete.

When will the tests take place?

The tests will take place in room B26 during the next fortnight and class teachers will escort students to B26 when it is their turn. The schedule is summarised in the table below.

Thank you for your support as we continue to help every child settle in and thrive at Westbourne

Kind regards
