Junior Maths Challenge
Thursday 1st May 2024
For a few years, students at Westbourne Academy have competed in the annual Junior Mathematics Challenge for UK secondary schools. As you may already be aware, your child is one of a small group of 20 students, who have been selected from Years 7 and 8, to take part in this year’s Junior Challenge.
The UK Mathematics Trust is a charitable organisation which aims to advance the education of young people in mathematics. They were formed in 1996 and work with hundreds of volunteers across the UK to organize competitions promoting problem solving and team work and other mathematical enrichment activities.
Their biggest competitions are the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Mathematical Challenges, which have over 700,000 entries each year, and are the UK’s most popular school Mathematical Challenges. They invite the highest-scoring students to take part in follow-on rounds and international rounds and I am delighted to say that we have frequently had students qualify for the follow-on rounds, achieving some of the highest scores in the UK.
The competition will take place during lesson 2 on Thursday 1st May in room A21. Students will miss their usual timetabled lesson on that day and instead will meet in specified room to be confirmed for exam conditions. If they wish to do any preparation resources can be found here: https://ukmt.org.uk/current-past-papers
There will be a practice session before the challenge where students will get a sense of what it will be like in the real thing. This will be held at lunchtime on the Friday 25 April in room A27.
We hope you are as proud of your child as we are and we will let you know how they get on after the competition. If you have any questions, please contact me at school.
