Food and Farming Student Day Hollow Trees Farm

Year 10 Hospitality and Catering

Wednesday 18 June 2025

I would like to invite your child to join us on a fantastic day to Hollow Trees Farm. It is a great opportunity to find out about the farming industry, meet farmers, scientists, engineers and watch live demonstrations.

The day is held on a mixed working Suffolk farm. The event is a rare opportunity for students to learn from over 50 industry representatives who will be on hand to advise students on the vast opportunities available within the thriving agriculture and food production industry. Everything from field to fork, engineering to agronomy, research to retailing, grain trading to vegetable growing will be represented.

A bespoke workbook will be provided for every student to record their findings, as well as a locally sourced free packed lunch.

This is a great opportunity for the students and I hope that this will bring what students have been learning in the classroom to life.

Students will not need to wear their academy uniform to school. However, students should still be appropriately dressed for this trip as they are ambassadors for the academy and will be at an outdoor environment ie no crop tops or flipflops.

We will be travelling by coach, departing the academy at 09:00. We will depart from the venue at 14:45 by coach and anticipate arriving back at the academy at approximately 15:15 subject to traffic. Students will be dismissed from school at 15:15 to make their own way home or be collected.

Students will be accompanied by Mrs Brown, Ms Rosher and me and a qualified emergency first aider will be in attendance.

Below is our itinerary for this activity.

08:15               Students arrive at school as normal

08:30               Students report to tutor time as normal

14:45               Coach departs back to school

15:15               Estimated arrival back at Westbourne Academy

Students will be provided with a free lunch, but may wish to bring snacks as well and will need to bring enough water and drinks for the day.

Students will also need appropriate clothing and equipment for the weather on the day ie sun cream and hat or rain coats and wellies.

Students may bring their mobile phones to communicate with parents/carers on the return journey. Any personal effects or valuables brought to school or brought on trips remain the responsibility of students if they are lost, stolen or damaged.

This visit is fully covered by the academy’s insurance policy for educational visits and journeys (Department for Education).

The cost of the trip will be £7.50 per student which is payable through MCAS by 22 April 2025. To give consent for your child to participate, please look out for a separate email from our trip management system, Evolve.  Please check your junk and spam inboxes over the next week or so. If there is insufficient interest, this trip may be cancelled.

If you have any questions with regards to the trip, please do not hesitate to contact me at school.

Regards

Mrs S Ewers
