C3 Consequences and Detention Strategy

As you will be aware, we have been working very hard as an academy to further develop behaviour and culture at Westbourne Academy.

Our student body has responded well. Mr Higgon has shared details of the impact of our strategies on reducing Persistent Defiance. We have significantly reduced the number of students out of lessons, with lateness to school and to lessons also reduced through a consistent drive on expectations and standards.

We are still early in our journey, and we will continue to develop our procedures and strategies to strengthen our behaviour system.

A C3 removal from any lesson generates a detention, which currently takes place after school. Detentions are communicated through MCAS to parents and carers who have signed up to the app or online MCAS portal. To receive this information, please ensure that notifications are turned on. For those without notifications enabled, you will receive an email regarding any detentions. We will continue to monitor our communication systems and the information being shared to keep you fully informed about behaviour, reward, and recognition.

You will see from the attached C3 detention strategy that detentions will now take place at lunchtime in the first instance. Only detentions which escalate will take place after school on a Monday and Thursday. We welcome your support in ensuring that students attend their detentions promptly.

WA Detention Strategy March 2026

An effective detention and consequences system (C-system) ensures that we can remove barriers to learning caused by disruption through negative behaviour. In this process, the certainty of consequence is essential.
