Safeguarding Bulletin: Mental Health Awareness Week

Next week we will be recognising Mental health Awareness Week, with this year’s theme being ‘This is My Place’.  Our academy focus will be ‘Belonging – helping every young person to feel safe, valued and connected within the community’.

This week, students have been introduced to the theme during assemblies. We also relaunched our SWIM programme (Support with Individual’s Mental Health). SWIM is our graduated, three-wave approach to supporting young people’s mental health and wellbeing.  More information will follow.

We have also taken time to remind students about the ‘Safe Spaces’ available to them and how they can access support, including:

  • the SHARP reporting system
  • student slips, available in form tutor bases, which allow students to request a meeting with a trusted member of staff

Throughout Mental Health Awareness Week, students will explore the top 10 tips for good mental health and take part in raising awareness, linked to belonging and feeling part of a supportive community.

Daily Focus for Mental Health Awareness Week:

  • Monday – This is my place at school

Exploring how our school environment can be a safe and supportive place for everyone

  • Tuesday – Relationships and Belonging

Focusing on friendships, positive relationships, and feeling connected to others

  • Wednesday – Safe spaces and seeking support

Reminding students where and how to ask for help, and reinforcing that support is always available

  • Thursday – Looking after ourselves and others

Sharing practical strategies for maintaining good mental health and supporting peers

  • Friday – Celebrating our community

Reflecting on what makes our school a place where everyone belongs

Alongside these activities, the SWIM programme will continue to provide targeted support for individual students who may need additional help with their mental health and wellbeing.

We encourage parents and carers to talk with their children about the week’s theme and to remind them that asking for support is a positive and important step.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support in promoting the wellbeing of our school community.

Kind regards
