Westbourne Academy CCF to Brave the Cold in Support of Homeless Veterans

This March, the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) at Westbourne Academy will join teams across the UK in the Royal British Veterans Enterprise (RBVE)’s Great Tommy Sleep Out, a national challenge designed to raise awareness and funds for veterans facing homelessness.

The Great Tommy Sleep Out unites thousands who step outside their comfort zones to support veterans who have served their country but now face the harsh reality of homelessness. RBVE is dedicated to empowering veterans and people with disabilities by creating jobs, providing homes, and building communities. Funds raised through this event directly support emergency housing, employment opportunities, and community care within the RBVE Village.

Westbourne Academy’s CCF cadets and staff, led by veterans Mr Carr and Mr Farinos, will participate by sleeping outdoors to highlight the ongoing struggles many veterans face after service. “As veterans ourselves, we understand that the battle does not always end when the uniform comes off. While some find their footing after service, many face unseen struggles as they transition back into society. As a Combined Cadet Force, and as a school rooted in a community of veterans, we stand together to do our part — to honour service, support those who served beside us, and ensure no veteran is left behind,” said Mr Carr.

The Great Tommy Sleep Out encourages participants to sleep outside for one night or more in safe locations, demonstrating solidarity and driving change for veteran homelessness.

Lisa Farmer OBE, Chief Executive of RBVE, expressed her gratitude: “The Great Tommy Sleep Out is a powerful act of solidarity. One night outside cannot mirror the trauma of life on the streets, but it shows veterans that the public refuses to ignore their struggle. Thanks to the funds raised, veterans who were once street homeless can access safe shelter, welfare and healthcare support, and training to rebuild independence. I want to thank everyone taking part this March. By braving the cold, you are not only raising vital funds but also shining a light on veteran homelessness and helping us ensure that no veteran is left behind.”
