Thrive at Westbourne Academy
At Westbourne Academy, we are committed to supporting the mental health, emotional wellbeing, and personal development of every student through the Thrive Approach.
The Thrive Approach is a trauma-sensitive, evidence-informed framework that helps children and young people develop emotional resilience and positive relationships. Drawing on research from attachment theory, neuroscience, child development, and play-based learning, it recognises that behaviour is a form of communication and seeks to understand the underlying needs behind it.
We understand that students may face a wide range of challenges, including anxiety, stress, trauma, mental health difficulties, emotional regulation needs, and the impacts of neurodiversity. Every young person is unique, and therefore each student receives support tailored to their individual needs and experiences.
Through the Thrive Approach, we focus on building strong, trusting relationships that help students feel safe, valued, and understood. Using the principles of P.A.C.E. (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy) and W.I.N. (Wonder, Imagine and Notice), we support students in developing self-awareness, emotional regulation, and resilience.
Alongside individual and small group Thrive interventions, students can also access our Thrive Gardening Club. This nurturing and therapeutic space provides opportunities for young people to connect with nature, develop practical skills, build confidence, and experience a sense of achievement. Through planting, growing, and caring for the environment, students can improve their wellbeing, reduce stress and anxiety, strengthen social connections, and develop a greater sense of responsibility and belonging within the school community.
By helping young people understand and manage their emotions, we enable them to fully engage in learning, build confidence, and achieve their potential both in school and beyond. Thrive is an integral part of our commitment to nurturing well-rounded, emotionally healthy young people who are equipped to succeed now and in the future.
At Westbourne Academy, we believe that when students feel emotionally secure and supported, they are empowered to thrive.
