ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE END OF THE SUMMER TERM
Well the end of another academic year is almost upon us and what a year it has been. There is quite a bit of ground to cover now that our planning for September is much clearer than it was just one week ago, however this letter will focus on the last days at the academy and the usual reminders for the start of the new term. There will be a separate letter over the summer regarding testing planned for the start of term and other points arising from the summer holidays and government announcements.
Last Day of Term
As usual, on the last day of the summer term on Tuesday, we will hold a whole school assembly during period 4 at 12:00. This will be virtual and students will go to their usual timetabled lesson to watch the assembly; we still cannot mix year group bubbles in the sports hall.
On Tuesday, all students will be dismissed at the earlier time of 13:00 – 13:15. They will have morning break as normal but there will be no lunch time service. Any students who are eligible for Free School Meals will need to buy their food at morning break.
We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you and farewell to some of our colleagues who are moving on to pastures new: Mr Dyer is hanging up his purple pen after 43 years of service to Westbourne and we wish him all the best in his retirement. Mr Myers, Mr Rose and Mrs Baxter are taking on new challenges at new schools and so is our Senior Science Technician, Mr Young. We also say thank you and good bye to Mrs Bowler, one of our exam invigilators and teaching assistants. On behalf of students in Year 9 and in Nightingale House, we would like to thank Mrs Lambert for her unstinting dedication and pastoral support over the past couple of years.
This term, we also say goodbye to some of our governors who have completed two terms (8 years) of service: Dr Impey, Mr Sparrow, Mrs Duehring, Mrs Taylor and Miss Abbott (the reality is that Dr Impey and Mr Sparrow have actually given decades of service). We would like to thank them for their time, support and commitment to the academy. In September, we will have an update from the Chair, Miss Rayner with details about any governor vacancies.
The New Term
As already stated we will write to you separately about the start of the new term and what that entails. The government are recommending that schools offer LFT covid testing to students and we will forward details of testing over the holidays. Our plans are to complete some of the testing before the term actually starts:
Tuesday 31 August: Year 7, 10 and 11
Thursday 2 September: Years 8 and 9
Friday 3 September: Year 7, 10 and 11 [only Year 7 will attend the academy]
Monday 6 September: Years 8 and 9 [all year groups attending the academy]
Uniform & Equipment
Students must please wear their full and complete academy uniform when they return in September and be properly equipped for learning in terms of pens, pencils, a rule, a Casio calculator (the academy sells this for a subsidised price of £5), headphones for music/computing and a reading book.
The school photographers will be with us on Tuesday 7 September to photograph students in all year groups and academy jumpers need to be worn. If the weather remains warm at the start of term we will move to warm weather rules where jumpers are optional.
When buying new school shoes this summer, please remember to abide by our rule that shoes must be plain black and made from leather/leather-look materials. Canvas shoes are not permitted because they do not protect your child’s feet in wet weather.
For a reminder of our expectations with regards to equipment, academy uniform, shoes, trousers and accessories, please visit the Parent/Uniform page of our website. Please note that if your child plans to have a nose piercing, that they do so at the start of the holidays, so that they are able to remove the piercing before attending the academy and abide by our uniform standards.
PMG Schoolwear Ipswich have asked us to tell parents that they are offering online shopping as well as an appointment system with free click and collect. Their deadline is 12 August for delivering clothing items in time for the start of term.
Term Dates & PD Days
Our term dates, staff training days and holidays for the next two academic years are available to view on our academy website under the News and Dates page. Please keep this in mind when booking your holidays throughout the year.
Year 11 Leavers
Our Exams Officer will be emailing parents and students separately about the arrangements for collecting exam results on 12 August as well as details of the JCQ appeals procedure. In the interim, please email email@example.com with any queries. I know that Mr Payne has been regularly updating Year 11 students with details of apprenticeship vacancies and other free training opportunities taking place this summer. If there any any further updates from Mrs Woodhouse regarding Y11 Prom on 10 August then she will email students and parents beforehand.
So, as we draw the curtain on a truly exceptional year, thank you. Your children have been resilient, more engaged and better behaved than ever before. My colleagues have gone the extra mile week after week. You have been incredibly supportive and motivating for so many of us with the kind and thoughtful emails, calls or cards that have seen us all through.
Thank you again and have a wonderful summer break.
Mr M Bouckley
